Explore how computers represent data - and what that means for us!
While computer hardware and software have come a long way, there is one thing that has not changed about them since their creation: they are largely reliant on numbers.
Humans, with our complex brains, are able to process tons of different data. We can see and recognize letters, we understand grammar and sentence structure, we can "see" colors like blue and red, and so on and so forth. However, computers do not possess most of these abilities. They have no eyes to see colors, they have no ears to hear how different languages are spoken, etc.
What computers do understand, though, are numbers. Knowing this, how can we use this concept to communicate with computers so they do what we want them to do? Further, how do we do it in a way that keeps it human-readable for us when the computer explains itself?
With this short presentation, we will explore just that: how we utilize numbers to represent data. Everything you see on the screen right now is just numbers to the computer - whether that's the letters you're reading or individual colored pixels that make up your screen view. This presentation will seek to demystify this concept in an introductory way that doesn't require a shred of previous computer experience.
By understanding how data works with a computer, you'll set yourself up to explore tons of other topics. This includes the effects digital systems have on our society, the implications of data transfer between computers, and so on. In addition, these skills will make sure you gain a greater appreciation for how your computer itself is working.
No matter what may change in the future, learning about data representation will make sure you're ready - even if we start representing everything with cereal. ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f08nDA0aEyI
