NVIDIA 12vHPWR Plug forms 500°C Miniature Sun? Melting PCIE 5 Connector RTX 4090
Compuguy123 / Winkli
Wtf NVIDIA, 1000 Watts through 1/2 a 6+2 pin plug in Current capacity?!?!? SAME or WORSE contact area?! Melting and Burning 12v 16 Pin EPS RTX is alarming when you have half the cross section gauge at the plug. RTX 4090 and 4080ti needs to be recalled before NVIDIA is sued in a major court battle. With the metal dust and filaments being not smushed properly inside the plug, you can form tiny incandescent light bulbs at 500°C a pop. It's obvious how and why the connectors melt.
There is no real solution short of creating very high pressure springs against each of the 3 dimples, or there will be no pressure to press the dust flush with the metal contact surface. Each pin has neither the surface area or the gauge thickness to conduct that amount of heat away; it's a single 1mm^2 pin...
This isn't just User Error or Quality Control. It's the EPS 12VHPWR that cripples to begin with -- put a ruler to it. There have been hundreds of reports of 'fixed' and 'high quality' 16 Pin 12V EPS HPWR connectors having burnt and melted regardless.
This is how the Cross Sectional Current Area and even the Contact Area of the dimples/slats falls to even the most basic single 6+2 pin ATX connector. Basic grade school maths combined with a grade 10 Engineering Course - You can't Halve the Gauge thickness and carry SIX TIMES peak power?! How NVIDIA failed due diligence is shocking -- let alone cutting factors of safety so fine that the connector pins on the card side can rotate themselves nearly 20 degrees from the factory - compounding issues where burrs and pieces of metal create incandescence inside the connector.
NVIDIA's new 12VHPWR connector fails to take on even a single 6+2 Pin ATX power connector in Cross Sectional and possibly on Contact Area too. It needs a recall more than the price tag. We compare and bench the dimensions of the 16 Pin EPS connector against the old gold standard 150 Watt 6+2 pin.
I propose fixes for the connector and how NVIDIA can push a stopgap solution with gold plating and Carbon grease. MSI Afterburner Fan Curve included to keep the connector cool. This is a fire hazard created by pure greed and corporate arrogance.
Make sure to get pure carbon grease, that is, the stuff that Jaycar releases in Australia, or whatever it's called over there. Just needs to be carbon microparticles and suspension material such as silicone oil. Don't overdo it, just enough to fill the little holes on the connector WITHOUT SPILLAGE.
