Fractured Geometry - A Axis
Vilakshan Kandwal
Piece 3: A Axis A Axis completes the trio of axes, but unlike the more concrete X and Y, this axis doesn’t adhere to conventional geometry. The choice of "A Axis" instead of a typical zero axis introduces an abstract dimension—one that moves beyond the physical realm into something less defined, more conceptual. The letter "A" denotes an axis of abstraction, a space where geometry no longer follows strict rules but fractures into something more fluid, open to interpretation. This abstract sense complements the theme of Fractured Geometry, where forms break, distort, and reveal unexpected meanings. The composition begins with sharp hits from the timpani, setting a tone of unease and anticipation. The timpani’s deep resonance introduces a feeling of instability, as if the ground is shifting beneath the listener. The strings follow, but their entrance does not bring calm—rather, it heightens the sense of unpredictability, with the bassoon and clarinet introducing discordant elements that add tension. These instruments do not harmonize conventionally; instead, they interact in uneasy ways, creating fractures in the soundscape. Pizzicato notes from the violins punctuate this tension, their sharp, plucked tones further unsettling the listener. These pizzicato gestures act like fragments, brief and scattered, adding to the piece’s fragmented, almost disjointed feel. This deliberate fracturing of musical elements ties directly to the A Axis concept—an axis where clarity and form are secondary to abstraction and unpredictability. The choice of A Axis speaks to the deeper theme of Fractured Geometry. Just as in mathematics, where axes provide reference points for movement and position, this axis represents a space where the geometry breaks down where patterns dissolve into abstract emotions and ideas. It connects to the overarching idea that even when forms fracture, they don’t lose meaning. Instead, they open up new spaces for interpretation and emotional depth. In A Axis, the composition does the same, moving away from clear musical lines and inviting the listener into a world of abstract sensations and fractured, yet cohesive, musical ideas.
