The fencing recently installed by Castle Stage Hire Ltd around Dublin’s Grand Canal and outside the International Protection Office (IPO) building has stirred controversy. Intended to prevent migrants from sleeping in these areas, the barriers have failed to address the underlying issues, while negatively impacting local food businesses and altering the neighborhood's atmosphere. Critics suggest that if Ireland and the UK had a stronger, more controlled border system, there would be less strain on urban spaces like Dublin, making such measures unnecessary. The absence of effective border management has led to short-term solutions like these, which do little to address the broader challenges at play.
