This all started as an experiment to try to different finishing techniques and it turned into an ash slab floating shelf with invisible hardware.

I have been wanting to try a few new finishing techniques on an open grain wood project to narrow down a time efficient and durable finish for table builds. I thought I grabbed a slab of hickory off my wood rack and got started to make a floating shelf. After I ran the wood over the first tool I was quick to discover that I was working with an Ash slab…no big deal it has a open grain like hickory so it will be a good test and is easier to work with!

I specifically wanted to try and fill the wood grain with 3 coats of Aqua Coat and finish the wood with one coat of Rubio mono coat. This proved to be a successful finish but it was not faster as the 3 coats of Aqua coat take a while to apply and allow to finish. I will skip this in the future. The Rubio was amazing, will definitely be using this in the future!
