Using Excel's Text To Columns To Make Troubleshooting Easier

Any analyst will tell you how much easier it is to see a pattern graphically as opposed to a tabular format. This simple introduction leads me right into my next video. Many times you are presented with either a screen full or a file fill of text that you need to analyze. It could be a log, a trace file, SNMP stats but in any event, it’s a file full of data. I’ve been showing people this tip for years. I basically take a bunch of test, open it in Excel, convert it to text, then I can graph it, or anything I want to it.
Even though the example I showed was quite simple, I’ve used this same technique to create Pivot tables, and other advanced reports.
