Howto Modify Handcuffs for Safe Lockpicking, Movie props, Costume, Cosplay, Halloween etc
techwg
In this howto video, I show you how to easily modify a real pair of genuine handcuffs so that they can be pulled open for safety. This is great if you want to experience picking handcuffs open while you are wearing them, but want that added safety and confidence that if you feel you are stuck, you can always pull them open to free yourself.
If you double lock them, they WILL remain locked. This modification technique only works if you leave them single locked. To double lock cuffs, you either jab the end of the key into a little hole on the side or into a window that is cut out and slide a wire across. If this separate extra step is not done, then after you have modified your handcuffs in this way, you can easily pull them open. Just don't double lock them!
You can also put some glue or epoxy in the double lock area to prevent someone easily sticking a key or paperclip in them without you realising if you are wearing them as part of some cosplay or costume thing. If you do not do this, you can always just have the double lock facing towards your body (if it's the little hole on the side like the cuffs I showed) to make it more difficult for someone to "troll" you in that manner.
Still, if you use your modified handcuffs, always have a key with you that is accessible, just in case.
How steep you make your new slopes on the teeth will determine how hard it is to pull them open. If it is a very gradual slope they might fall open by accident with the slightest movement. If the slope you made is too steep it might be extremely hard to pull them open. So test the first tooth and get the angle just how you want and then you know how to do the rest of the teeth, how to hold the cuffs and what angle to hold your rotary tool or file etc.
This modification technique could be useful for lockpicking, cosplay, costumes, movie props, TV props, Halloween, bedroom activities where you want real handcuffs but you don't want them properly secured, handcuff training, toys for older kids that look and feel real but can pull open, etc There's a lot of options for ways to use handcuffs post gimmicking.
