They are called Electric Unicycles or sometimes EUC. Electric unicycles are a pretty simple construction with one wheel with a center motor, some control electronics, and a huge battery all kept together by a plastic body shell. Most riders use wheel size of 14, 16 or 18 inch

Electric Unicycles is based on gyro stabilization. They are controlled by shifting your weight forward to make it move forward, and you move your weight back to make it stop. When the weight shift, the wheel try’s to keep up to get the wheel in balance. You accelerate by leaning harder forward. The electronics on the control boards helps keep the axial balance, where you have to keep your balance over the side by your self, similar to a bicycle.

The actual range depends on factors like battery size, riding style, the weight of rider and temperature. If you ride aggressively around top speed in cold weather, the range can easily be reduced by up to 30-40%
