Rocket pioneer Wernher von Braun wrote the book “Mars Project” in 1948-49, describing in detail a manned flight to Mars. This was first published in German and English in the early 1950s after eighteen US publishers rejected the manuscript. A short time later, it was extended by a technical appendix and published as “The Mars Project” in 1953.
