Simple Linear Regression with a Binary Explanatory Variable

Simple linear regression can be used when the explanatory variable is a binary categorical explanatory variable. In this situation, a dummy variable is created to indicate one of the two levels of the binary variable. The dummy variable is 1 when the observation has that level and is 0 otherwise. A simple linear regression model is then fit using this dummy variable.
