Argentinian Retirees Clash With Police As Milei Vetoes Pension Reform
red.
Clashes between Argentinian retirees and police erupted in the South American country’s capital, Buenos Aires. The retirees took to the streets to protest ultra-neoliberal President Javier Milei’s veto of a newly passed pension reform.
With an inflation rate of a whopping 263.4%, Argentina continues to grapple with a crippling inflation crisis. To compensate for this, the country’s senate passed a pension bill to raise retirement benefits by over 8%. The new law also guarantees that the minimum pension will be enough to afford essential goods for the elderly who are facing severe levels of poverty.
Milei, convinced that lawmakers only seek to break his austerity program, announced that he would fully veto the new pension bill. “I will veto everything, I don’t give a damn.” Milei previously said, insisting on standing by his administration’s zero fiscal deficit policy.
The latest developments are likely to further widen the rift between the “libertarian” leader and the country’s opposition-controlled Congress.
