How to Block Websites in Linux using /etc/hosts file
quidsup
Tutorial on Blocking DNS queries with /etc/hosts, this applies to any Linux Distro whether its Ubuntu, Debian, Arch, Fedora, etc... Linux Mint comes with a handy GUI tool called Mint Nanny which you can use instead of this method. It can be easily circumvented by hand if you know the IP address of a website, but for blocking an automated app /etc/hosts is perfectly fine.
Terminal Commands: sudo cp /etc/hosts /etc/hosts.old sudo nano /etc/hosts
Or for using a GUI tool: sudo -H gedit /etc/hosts
