The Size of a Black Hole (Gravity, Escape Velocity, high school physics)
Physics Made Easy
Do you have an idea of how large the Earth would be if, suddenly, it collapsed into a black hole? The answer is mesmerizing!
In this video, we will discuss of the escape velocity at a position on the event horizon. Then, by playing with the escape velocity formula, we will realize that we can calculate the size of any object that would collapse into a black hole. We will use the Earth as an example, but you will learn how to do this calculation for any object, even your cat!
This video is a teaser of a longer lecture that looks into grand detail at the notion of escape velocity. This longer video should be out in a week or so. Enjoy!
STRUCTURE OF THE VIDEO 00:00 Introduction. 00:33 What is the event horizon of a black hole ? 00:43 What can escape the event horizon of a black hole ? 01:04 Escape velocity of a black hole. 01:26 Determining the size of a black hole. 01:40 The size of the Earth if it were a black hole. 02:33 Quiz: what would happen to the moon if the Earth became a black hole ? 02:49 Outro. 03:41 Additional thoughts: Is the escape velocity of a black hole really the speed of light?
