Energy levels of an atom ( IB Physics - Atomic Physics)
Physics Made Easy
What does it mean when one says that the energy of an atom is quantised?
It means that the atom can only exist for certain energies. These energy levels are specific of the atom itself.
You will learn in this video what are energy levels of an atom, and what it implies in terms of absorbing and emitting light (considered here as quantised amounts of light energy called photons).
We will also detail the photon absorption and emission process in terms of the energy of a hydrogen atom.
Finally we will realize that this phenomena is at the origin of emission and absorption spectra which are at the base of spectroscopy (chemical analysis). This concept will be further developed in another video.
