Electrostatic Physics, It's Magic!
Physics Made Easy
Become a Magician thanks to Physics! Static electricity and magic are closely related: Magic consists sometimes in moving objects with invisible forces. That is what static electricity does via the Coulomb Force that occurs between electric charges!
This video will show you three awesome science experiments: _ Roll a metal can without touching it, _ Make bubbles change their shape and move when are approached by a charged PVC pipe, _ Make rubber balloons stick on things, and then un-stick them without touching them.
All these tricks take advantage of static electricity.
To reproduce these tricks at home, you don’t need much: A piece of PCV pipe , some bubble soap, an aluminium can, some rubber balloons, some cloth of old pullover…
But there’s much more: I will explain to you the physics behind these amazing phenomena. Once you understand how it works, you should be able to design your own magical tricks! And the best thing of all, is that there is no prior physics knowledge needed to get this! It is open to all, even if you have never studied physics in high school!
To do so, I first explain the nature of matter (what matter is made of), then I describe the triboelectric effect (transfer of charged particles like electrons from a material to another by contact). After that, I discuss what it implies for a material to be an electric insulator or an electric conductor.
With these simple notions, it becomes super easy to understand the can and the soap bubble tricks. And then to develop new tricks on your own…
Enjoy the video and have a lot of fun with static electricity!
