Deriving Energy Levels of the Hydrogen Atom ( IB Physics - Atomic Physics )
Physics Made Easy
Learn how to derive the energy levels of a Hydrogen atom from scratch in 6 easy steps! It is a beautiful demonstration that reminds us that art and science are really not so far apart!
By posing his model of the Hydrogen atom (An electron in circular motion around a proton), Niels Bohr was able to predict the existence of emission and absorption spectra.
This video will show you how he did it by proposing that the angular momentum of the electron was quantised, and how he ends up with this famous equation for energy lvels permitted in the Hydrogen atom:
En = -13.6/n^2 (in eV), n being the level number (main quantum number)

This video is aimed at High Level (HL) IB Physics students. Standard Level (SL) students are invited to stick around as this demonstration relates to many areas of Physics that are in their program.
This video is the fourth episode of the Atomic Physics Series. View the 3 first episodes if you haven't done so yet:
Episode 1: "Energies in an atom". This episode introduces the series by reminding the viewer of the concepts of energy (Kinetic, potential, internal and mechanical). Within this context, it discusses the energies involved in an atom of Hydrogen. https://youtu.be/g9ieCabz_PI
Episode 2: "What is light", that describes how an atom can gain or lose energy. https://youtu.be/XwNsi1vzjTs
Episode 3: "Energy levels of an atom", that explains that the energy of an atom can only take specific values. This shows why atoms can be characterized by their emission or absorbtion spectra. https://youtu.be/MHJO6pm-hoM
Episode 5: "Exam preparation - Atomic Physics". In this episode, we will be working on an exercise inspired by past papers (IB and A-Level) that deal with calculations in regards to atomic energy levels and emission spectra. https://youtu.be/XS8xQzCDT3k
