Storm Gentoo: A User-Friendly Calculate/Gentoo Spin?
OldTechBloke
Storm Gentoo is a custom spin by Ben Fitzpatrick, based on Calculate Linux, which in turn is based on Gentoo.
As in my previous review of Storm OS, this is a nicely configured XFCE desktop that comes fully loaded with a plentiful set of applications. What sets this apart though, is its Calculate/Gentoo base.
Calculate Linux has been around for quite a while now and it describes itself as a user-friendly source distro. It uses the cl-update command as a front end to the portage tree, which does a lot of the heavy lifting normally associated with a vanilla Gentoo install. And in that sense it delivers. Installation is quick and easy and updated are managed through a graphical application.
However, there is still a time penalty compared to the likes of Arch and if I'm honest I struggled to see a use case for this distro, other than for those who like to tinker.
If that's you, go ahead.
