Spectrwm - More Adventures in Tiling WM Land
OldTechBloke
After moving over to BSPWM my adventures in tiling wm land continue with Spectrwm.
I keep hearing about Spectrwm so thought it was time I gave it a try, and I'm pleased I did!
It's a simple, highly configurable tiling window manager that draws it's influences from the likes of DWM and Xmonad. However, and this is important, it uses a plain text file for configuration.
So, if like me, you have tried fighting haskell and python with xmonad and qtile, this comes as a pleasant change.
Out of the box it's ready to go. However, out of the box it's really not very pretty. But once you've got to grips with the configuration file you can make it look however you want.
It has a simple bar but that can be decorated with just about any information you can extract from a bash script. It doesn't have a system tray, but there are alternatives such as trayer and stalonetray should you feel the need to add one.
Overall I enjoyed setting it up, although it did take me the best part of a day. But I'm really happy with the end result and I'm going to live in the system for the next month at least.
Isn't linux wonderful? We have so much choice!
