Snaps, Flatpaks and the Problem of Choice
OldTechBloke
There's always a flamewar going on somewhere in the Linux world. From the old debates around KDE v Gnome, through to the VI v Emacs discussions, through to the systemd issue.
Emerging from this rich history of debate and conflict we now seem to have a new arena opening up with snaps and flatpaks as the main players.
Part of this is about choice, and the fact that the Linux communities constant innovation has given us so many options. Unfortunately, choice creates it's own problems.
In this video I take a sweeping look at some of the issues along with the advantages and disadvantages of the new distro-agnostic package systems.
Those new to Linux might wonder what all the fuss is about, but there are certainly some real concerns. However, in general I see the emergence of these new formats as broadly positive, to be embraced rather than feared.
I hope you enjoy the video :-)
