In 2019, archaeologists in Mexico discovered the first known temple dedicated to Xipe Totec, THE FLAYED LORD. The Flayed Lord is represented as a skinless human corpse. It is said that he skinned himself to feed his starving worshippers. He was seen as a god of many things, including war, agriculture, liberation, and even life and death itself. Priests worshipped The Flayed Lord by sacrificing and skinning their victims in his name, and they built the temple with two altars for that purpose. At the first alter, the victims were sacrificed, and their hearts were cut out. At the second altar, they were skinned from head to toe. The priests would then ritually wear the skins to bring about regeneration and fertility. The flayed skins were believed to hold powers that could cure sickness and mothers would often take their children to touch them for relief. This would happen every year and the sacrifices would last for 20 days straight. Pretty scary god, right? What do you think?
