DELAG was world’s first airline. It was formed in 1909 and operated passenger flights until 1935. It was organized for the purpose of making commercial travel by zeppelins viable. The company also created commercial demand for airships at a time when interest from the German military remained uncertain. The first airship DELAG purchased and operated was the LZ7, the Deutchland. Like future passenger airships, the Deutchland was outfitted with a beautiful passenger cabin - carpeted, and paneled with mahogany. On June 28th 1910, the LZ7 made its first passenger flight and 7th overall, leaving Dusseldorf for a sightseeing trip. Onboard were twenty three passengers, mainly journalists. Soon after takeoff, the LZ7 ran into trouble. Inexperienced pilots struggled with bad weather and engine trouble, and the LZ7 crashed into the forest, destroyed the airship. Still, all passengers escaped without significant injury. Soon after, DELAG purchased its next airship, the LZ8…which also had a short flying career.
