What Does Science Fiction from North Korea Tell Us about the Country? #scifi #northkorea
My Dark Path
Science fiction is carefully controlled in North Korea, with guidelines laid out by Kim Jong-il in 1988, therefore, the country’s sci-fi stories illuminate how the communist government sees the world. In the novel Course Change by Li Geum-Cheol, a bomb is found on a Philippines bound plane that will detonate below ten thousand feet. The startled captain vainly tries to calm the terrorized passengers while a North Korean diplomat keeps his cool, telling everyone that his government will solve the crisis. He contacts North Korea and quickly their scientists develop an anti-gravity machine to hold the plane up in mid-air. The passengers are evacuated, the bomb is defused and the plane lands safely. The world celebrates North Korean ingenuity and technology. The novel’s plot is reminiscent of the movie Speed – but exposes the theme that the North Korean government has all the answers protagonists can only act with its approval.
