How the Double Agent George Blake Escaped a London Prison #history #spies #secretcodes #espionage
My Dark Path
George Blake’s story is like something straight out of a Cold War spy novel. Born in the Netherlands, in 1922. Blake became one of the most famous double agents during the Cold War. Blake was serving a whopping 42-year sentence in Wormwood Scrubs prison, London for spying for the Soviet Union. Now, here's where it gets really interesting. The escape was masterminded by three men: Sean Bourke, a petty criminal; Michael Randle and Pat Pottle, both anti-nuclear activists. These men sympathized with Blake – they liked him and thought his 42-year sentence was inhumane. The plan was audacious and carefully executed. First, they befriended Blake inside the prison. Then, on October 22, 1966, they managed to smuggle a walkie-talkie to him to coordinate the escape. Next, they threw a rope ladder over the prison wall during an exercise period. Blake, using this ladder, scaled the wall and dropped onto a mattress waiting for him on the other side. What happened next?
