How Did Jacek Karpinski Start Manufacturing Computers in Poland? #inventor #machinelearning
My Dark Path
In 1967, Polish engineer Jacek Karpinski had just built a computer to handle the data from the CERN particle accelerator.
Now, he wanted to design a computer that would fit in a briefcase.
When his employer couldn’t fund it, he went to the army for help. The army also didn’t fund it, arguing that the project was impossible because if it were possible, the Amercians would already have built it. Karpiński, however, wasn’t going to give up. With the help of a friend, he presented his idea to a British computer company. They loved it and wanted to set up manufacturing in the UK, but Karpiński was still loyal to his homeland. Finally, the communist government approved his project. In 1970, the Microcomputers Plant was established in Warsaw.
• It employed Polish workers but used British financing and western components.
• And within a year Karpiński delivered his design.
