Does Capitalism Commodify Mass Culture?

Žižek often discusses the commodification of culture under capitalism (as did Karl Marx). What do we make of this idea? Does capitalism really cheapen mass culture? Or, rather, does capitalism allow us to see more clearly what we truly value?
