Land Rover Defender TD5 Deployable step compressor timer fitted
Mike Makes It
If you've been watching my videos you may have come across a deployable step project I installed on my Defender. This video describes an issue I had and how it was over come. Basically the compressor will charge the reserve air tank when the pressure gets below 90psi and turn off at 120psi. This happens automatically if the air system is turned on. I have a switch mounted on the cubby box which has 3 positions. 1) On and will turn on the compressor if the ignition is on and the tank needs air. 2) Off, compressor unable to turn on, disabled. 3) Override ignition lockout and will simply turn on the compressor by passing the ignition and pressure switch. This position is not normally used. The whole point of the "upgrade" was to allow the compressor to turn on, if demanded to by the pressure switch 4 minutes after the ignition is switched on (and presumably the engine is running) as the compressor draws 43amps and I don't want that running as I'm trying to start the truck. You see when I went to start the Truck the compressor would fire up so I would turn it off, and usually forget to turn it back on!! Basically it's an old age thing!!! Well it works, the compressor is getting the top up when it needs it and there is no demand from it at engine start time.
The timer was bought from the usual place, Banggood and cost less than £5 for 5 delivered to the UK. They claim is a 0-200 second timer but the low end is not what I needed. I've set it to near maximum which is around 4 minutes which is ideal for my purposes. Amazon do list them but they are a ridiculous price so I've not included a link.
