Defender TD5 Tacho/rev counter upgrade YAE100790
Mike Makes It
You may have seen my earlier videos of the Roamerdrive install. The main reason for installing a tacho (rev counter) is to keep an eye on the revs of the engine as sometimes I’ll forget to select the Roamerdrive or if I have left the truck in 4th! It doesn’t happen often! Also, it’s a reminder on how much better the truck is with the Roamerdrive installed.
Anyway, my video’s (There are 2 parts to this build so keep a look out for them both) show what I had to do to get this cheap tacho working on my truck, that doesn’t have ABS brakes incidentally. It does make a difference as the cables are coloured differently but it can still be done either way. I’ve included links to useful sites and to my Google drive which contains images of the plugs which may help.
The connector I started at was connector (Black) C0658 plugged into the ECU under the driver’s seat (RH drive). https://www.lrworkshop.com/connectors/defender-1999/C0658
Pin 19 cable (white and slate (grey) on mine) goes to connector C1048 Pin 14 on righthand side of the instrument cluster on my RH drive truck. The mating connector C1040 has no corresponding pin so I will need to add one. The pin type for the Sumitomo HD Series MT, DS, HD, HM 14-way connector (6098-0254) is 8230-4282 Male Terminals. I’ve included a link to eBay for these. These are suitable for .75-1.25mm cable.
I bought a cheap oil temperature gauge from which I expected to rob the white needle and put onto the tacho, this way all of the instruments will look the same.
Keep a look out for part 2 as it didn't work out for me! All ended well though in the end.
All information supplied as is. I’ve tried my best to pull all the info together and believe it is correct. If there is something missing or wrong, let me know and I’ll correct it. Remember this information is relevant to MY Defender, without ABS, yours might just be different!
