Parametric Curves: Example 11: Conchoids of Nicomedes

In this video I go over another example on Parametric Curves and this time look at the famous family of curves known as Conchoids of Nicomedes. This family of curves is given by the parametric equations x = a + cos(t) and y = a*tan(t)+sin(t). In this example I change the values of a and see how the curve is changed. I use the very amazing Desmos calculator to see how the curve changes as well as how a particle moves along a path on the curve. The curves are known as Conchoids because of their resemblance to conch or mussel shells. They were first discovered by an ancient Greek mathematician Nicomedes; which I also go over a brief history lesson on him in the video. This is a very interesting video on graphing families of curves, as well as in using online calculators to graph these curves and create parametric animations, so make sure to watch this video!
