How to Convert a Video File to an OGV Video File Using VLC Media Player

Greetings, in this tutorial we shall be looking at how to convert a video file to an ogv video file. This tutorial will work for most file types like mp4, mpeg-4, avi, flv, WebM and more.

Sometimes an OGV video file is needed, for example playing a video file in the Godot 4 engine.

All you need to do is download VLC player, open up VLC media player then click on Media in the top left corner of the screen. Then click on convert/save. You next need to locate the video file you wish to convert to an ogv file, then click on convert/save again.

Next you need to click on the convert radio button, then click on the create new profile button. For encapsulation we will do ogg/ogm, for video codec we will use Theora and for audio codec we will use vorbis. We will also change the sample rate to 44100hz but you don't need to do that step. Also give a name for your preset profile to convert to an ogv file.

Then we click opn create to create our preset for an ogv file. You may already have this as a defualt preset in your VLC media player, but this is here to ensure this video works for all as you can't easily recover deleted presets. Be sure to select the preset you just made for the profile option. Also select a destination file. Make sure you have the file extension as .ogv instead of .ogg. As some software will treat .ogg as an audio file, even if there is video data in there.

Now click on the start button and VLC media player will convert your video file to an ogv file.
