Conversation with the Shadow - Active Imagination Meditation Exercise - Jungian Shadow Work
Make It Conscious
The shadow is the unconscious realm of the psyche that contains parts of ourselves that we repress, deny or hide from ourselves. It can consist of traits, as well as accompanying emotions, beliefs and desires. But like all personal qualities, there is value in the shadow when brought into conscious awareness. Engaging with our shadow is a vital step towards self-knowledge and attaining wholeness in ourselves.
Before we begin this exercise, briefly recall a situation where you weren't entirely satisfied with how you behaved or felt a niggling doubt about your choices. We're going to be engaging with the part of you giving rise to this conflict in yourself.
Remember that whatever you experience during this exercise is a reflection of your own mind and inner wisdom.
After completing the exercise, reflect on your experience and the insights you gained. How was your experience of your conversation with the shadow? What insights did you come to?

Active Imagination is a technique developed by the Swiss psychologist Carl Jung for engaging with the unconscious mind. Jung considered Active Imagination to be the most powerful way to access the unconscious mind and a vital technique for attaining wholeness of personality.
