Not Enough Items (NEI) for 1.7.2 makes your Minecraft life much easier. You have 3 modes that you can utilize: cheat mode, recipe mode (default), and utility mode.

Recipe Mode is your default standard mode that lets you find all the recipes for each block you have for every mod installed which is quite useful.

Utility Mode for Not Enough Items is like Recipe Mode but it gives you more freedom and includes things like Deleting Items, Turning Rain off and On, Switching to creative Mode, changing day settings, and healing yourself.

Cheat Mode allows you to have all the pages of items on the side but when you click on them you get a stack of that item.

To fix the Utility Mode issue with Not Enough Items (NEI) 1.7.2, you first go into your inventory, click on options at the bottom corner. Click on the inventory button. Click on the top corner "global", then right click the highlighted "W" next to the mode. This will allow you to use any mode you wish and not get overwritten by global overrides.

Ontop of all the modes mentioned for Not Enough Items, you can also check chunk boundaries which is a really useful tool that can be used in various situations: towny for bukkit would be a great use for it as plots are based on chunks by default which allow you to use this function to make towns more efficient.

Not Enough Items is one of the mods I first install on a new Minecraft installation. I recommend it for everyone.
