The European Union, otherwise known as the EU. Recently brought about new regulation on data protection and privacy for all individuals in the EU.
This law is more up to date, and far better primed for the times we're currently living in, and expect to be living in in the near future.
Although the Data Protection Directive is a CRUCIAL part of EU privacy and human rights law, GDPR is a replacement for this. This new regulation is going to put more control into your hands.
Back in 1995, when the Data Protection Directive was released, the technology used was nothing in comparison to the devices you're using today.
Although computers and laptops existed, there was little content available that was worthwhile using. The best internet service that we could buy, came in the form of dial-up modems that connection speeds of only 28.8 kilobits per second.
As a comparison, the iPhone X is capable of reaching a theoretical 866 megabits per second via wireless. This is over 30,000x faster than the speeds available via cable in 1995.
This technology gives us the power to browse facebook, like and subscribe to our favourite YouTubers (which you should do now), and download feature-length movies within minutes.
But, at the same time, these progressions in technology have let companies run riot. Leading to mass consumption and abuse of consumer data. Something that's all too prevalent in recent news on data misuse.
As you can probably see, laws based on the technology back then, don't apply well to today's technology. And you would surely like more say on how your data is used.
But the question still remains, WHAT IS ACTUALLY GOING TO CHANGE?
Well, this is the best part. GDPR genuinely stands as one of those regulations that empower the small, and stops the big-guys, the corporations, from abusing your custom.
