Running a TrueNAS VM in VirtualBox

- Download TrueNAS https://www.truenas.com/download-tn-core/
- Launch Virtualbox
- Create a New VM by selecting Machine ≫ New Name: TrueNAS Machine Folder: C:\VMs Type: BSD Version: FreeBSD (64-bit) Memory Size: 8192 MB Hard disk: Create a virtual hard disk now
- Click Create
- On the Create Virtual Hard Disk dialog Name the virtual disk image TrueNAS.vdi File size: 16 GB Hard disk file type: VDI Storage on physical hard disk: Dynamically Allocated
- Click Create
- Select the VM and Click Settings
- Select Display
- Slide the Video Memory to 128 MB
- Select Network
- Set the attached to dropdown to Bridged Adapter
- Select Storage
- Click on the CD-ROM drive
- Select the disc dropdown to the right ≫ Choose a virtual optical disc file...
- Browse to and select the downloaded TrueNAS .iso file
- Click OK
- Make sure the TrueNAS VM is selected and click Start ≫ Normal
- At the menu, press Enter to start the TrueNAS installer
- Select Install/Upgrade ≫ OK
- If prompted about not enough RAM select Yes to continue ≫ Press Enter
- Press the space bar to select the VBOX HARDDISK ≫ Press Enter
- Select Yes to continue the installation ≫ Press Enter
- Enter a root password twice ≫ Press Enter
- Select Boot via BIOS ≫ Press Enter
- After the installation completes select Devices ≫ Optical Drives ≫ Remove disk from virtual drive
- Click Force Unmount
- Select Machine ≫ Reset to reboot the VM
- Once TrueNAS has finished booting, note the URL on the screen
- Open a web browser and navigate to the TrueNAS URL
- Log into the Web UI with username root and the password set during the installation
- Welcome to TrueNAS
