Which RAID for your NAS? | RAID5 vs RAID6 Performance Review & Setup Guide

Should you setup your NAS with RAID5 or RAID6 or what about SHR or a Storage Pool? In this review we performance test the various options including encrypted and unencrypted to let you know.

SUMMARY RAID5 is 40-50% faster than RAID6, but if more than one drive fails at a time, you data is lost. RAID5 also better supports RAID recovery when failures occur. The best solution (though more expensive) is having multiple NAS units on RAID5, that way you get the speed and the backup. Of course if multiple units is outside your budget and you're happy with a cloud backup solution then RAID6 while slower is still a good option (it's the one I currently use).
