From chaos to slightly less chaos my server rack is finally re-cabled, labeled, & color coded
Computers Cats and More
Been dealing with a mess in my server rack for years now. Decided enough was enough. Upgrading the hardware is fun but it was long overdue to work on the cable mess. With a budget of $0 plus the cost of a label printer I feel I did well. It took the better part of a week but my rack is like 90-95% done now. Only thing left to do is dial in all my IP addresses and some minor hardware upgrades.
The biggest thing I would change is spend money on cables that are the right length. Also color coded power cables would be nice. Also the cable management arms don't help with the mess but I like them too much to give them up. I am bummed my 10Gb switch doesn't support 100Mb networking so I have 5 cables going to the top that could have been shorter.
If I were to spend money on color coded cables I suspect it would cost me another $350. Getting a switch more suitable for my needs would probably be around $1000 though. ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9xe5ya2kZI
