KeySmith versus Keyboard Maestro
While Keyboard Maestro is a phenomenal piece of software for Mac automation, it isn't the easiest to use. It's the old story of with great power comes with great responsibility. KeySmith have taken the approach of making something which will be of use to more people. It is so much easier to use even though it doesn't have half as much functionality. It does most of the things that most people want and could end up being more useful overall.
I think the best way to look at KeySmith versus Keyboard Maestro is to think of it as an extra to use alongside other Mac automation tools. I can see KeySmith working very well with Keyboard Maestro, Better Touch Tool, Alfred, Automator and whatever it is you might use. You can easily create a macro within KeySmith and have it triggered from within an automation you've created in the Keyboard Maestro. Get your macro started by triggering with a Better Touch Tool keyboard shortcut, mouse or trackpad trigger.
I have set it so that within KeySmith macros it uses the keyboard shortcut triggers to activate Moom and global keyboard shortcuts. I can quite easily have something happen based on a Keyboard Maestro set of actions from within KeySmith. By using this application along with other Mac automation tools, you exponentially grow the automation possibilities on your Apple computer.
In this KeySmith tutorial, I show you how to record a KeySmith macro. Getting started is very easy, all you have to do is to download a couple of the examples. I highly suggest you take these examples and extend them by adding extra actions. I like the one where you can create a new note with a date in the Apple Notes application. You can easily have this as a template with other references or questions to help you do your daily journal.
You don't have to keep the macro working just in one application. In the video tutorial I show you how I take text created within the Drafts application and sending it through application to encrypt that text. It starts off by creating the perfect circumstances for creating the text in Drafts. I use keyboard shortcuts to move side panels out of the way and gets a clean working space. Then more keyboard shortcuts to copy, paste and press buttons within Paranoia Text Encryption, before sending the encrypted text back into Drafts. Do have a look at my books about how to stop using email or how to protect your private data if you do need to send data via the extremely insecure email system.
