Getting started with Alfred
Here is an Alfred tutorial showing you the basics of what you can do with the utility app for your Mac. Alfred is more than just a simple application launcher. It has many more tricks hidden up its sleeves. Use Alfred to find files, search online in various places. You get information about TV series and movies through IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes. You only need to use the keyword to get into the specific search. If you have maths problems to solve few can go to Wolfram Alpha. Maybe you’re looking for images and you can find them through Flickr and Pinterest. All of these and more are available through the Alfred search. If you don’t put any search terms in the default searches look through Google, Amazon and Wikipedia.
Sometimes it is not necessary to go through the Alfred dialogue box. You can assign keyboard shortcuts to get to the actions pane. So if you are in Finder with a file selected, use the keyboard shortcut and go directly to the actions pain to get things done with that file. Move it around your computer to various places quickly and easily and you can even put it on to Yoink.
Alfred is a fantastic utility application which I think should be on all computers. It has a level of Mac automation allowing users to get things done quicker. It’s particularly useful for those of us who like to have our hands on the keyboard because it’s quicker than moving off to use the mouse or the trackpad.
In the next video we’ll look at how we can use snippets with Alfred. It doesn’t have the full functionality you’d get with TextExpander but is pretty useful all the same. In this video hi might be using some of the extra abilities available with the Power Pack. Considering all the functionality you get with Alfred and the PowerPoint version is well worth the small amount of money required to upgrade. You’ll also get the ability to add workflows and add even more automation goodness to your Mac computer usage. In this video we looked at the Alfred basics and in the next video will have a look at some of the higher-level functions of the application.
