How to use Google Translate in Google spreadsheets

A very important advantage of using google spreadsheets over Microsoft Excel is that you can use a lot of tools from the Google ecosystem. One such important tool is the google translate. Yes, google translate...if you have used in your phone; you know how good it is and especially the lovely live translation which can help you in a foreign country and you are not lost in translation…..
Guess what; google translate is available as a function in the google spreadsheets…. You can translate between any language pairs...almost..
Let’s see how this function works.
Open up a new spreadsheet and let’s say you have english language in column A and you want german language in column B. So, the function would be: =Googletranslate(A2,”en”,”de”)
Now these ISO codes can be found online. Just search for ISO language codes and you will get the ISO 639 codes from various sources.
It might happen sometimes that you are not aware of the ISO code of the source language or you do not know the source language at all. In such case, for the source language you can type auto in quotes for the source language and google will automatically detect the source language.
Now let’s try translating one sentence into multiple languages using Google translate function…..I am trying Spanish French Intalian Japanese and Arabic
See the results and check for yourself if they are correct or not. While using this function, the best practice would be paste the cells as values.
Wish that google would have allowed the agility of google translate to be used in Microsoft excel as well...but at the end of the day they are competitors. So, let’s try to get the best of both worlds.
One thing I have noted personally is that google translate in general does falter for longer sentences; so it is better to be used as a translator for labels or simple sentences.
