Using Intense shadows to make the portrait pop | Digital Painting in Photoshop Full Timelapse

I didn't realize until too late that the words look like they say "d*ck me" lol but it's supposed to say 'Pick me' as in pick-me girl ;)

In this video I painted a semi-realistic portrait of a girl and used intense dark values in the background to make the subject pop.

In this piece, I approach the painting with minimal reliance on anatomy guides. Notice that I began by drawing the eyes and slowly constructed the subject's face from there. What do you think of this painting process? Do you like to do the same?
