Why You Still Need Swap Space
Eric Adams
I had an issue recently where I ran out of memory and thought I'd lost quite a bit of work. This was due to having too little swap space on my system to account for times where I might overrun the amount of physical memory installed in my computer. It prompted me to think a bit on why this was and how I could make sure it didn't happen again. The truth is that many Linux distributions don't configure much, if any, swap space when being installed so if you don't think to do it yourself you can run into the same issue.
In this video, I cover what swap space is, why you need it and how to configure it. I show this process on two distributions, Ubuntu and Manjaro which is based on Arch, so you can see how the initial configuration differs and how to adjust the swap size.
