Automatically trim silence from videos - jumpcutter
Eric Adams
Note - I apologize for the audio weirdness at 1:55. Not sure what happened. I considered re-uploading it but it's only 7 seconds.
One of the things I have struggled with when editing videos is the time it takes to edit out all the silence. I tend to pause a lot when I'm thinking so 20-30% of every video I record is silence. It's not great for people to watch because it sounds odd and makes the video way longer than it needs to be. I had been spending hours trimming this by hand and thought there has to be a better way. Then I found jumpcutter.
jumpcutter is a Python script that wraps ffmpeg enabling you to automatically cut silence from raw video. You'll still need to edit the output to remove any unwanted content, retakes, and so on BUT it can save a tremendous amount of time. For example, a recent video I created was 43 minutes as raw footage, jumpcut reduced it to 31 minutes. Yes, there was 12 minutes of silence in that video which I would have had to clip in small pieces. I estimate that saved me over an hour of editing.
