RedHat are they Boiling the GPL Frog?
DJ Ware
I think most of you know by now about the Red Hat announcement for CentOS Stream and its future path "forward". Some have said it violates the GPL, some have said it doesn't, the truth is the GPL doesn't even matter anymore because its being replaced by the Apache License and the MIT License at an incredible rate of speed.
Im my analysis, I have found that out of every 10 packages only 2 retain the GPL license.
And I am "hopping" mad.
The GPL is what helped build our community of Linux, the packages we love to use, and one by one they are all being converted away from the GPL. I view this as another attempt at boiling the frog (GPL) by the large corporations which control the Linux distros used in commercial applications, cloud and HPC.
I agonized over this all weekend, investigating deeply using all of my resources I have gathered over the past 30 years of using Linux and here is what I came up with.
My findings may shock you, or they may not even surprise you, as to what has been going on since 2007. And, it isn't just Red Hat doing this, its all the major commercial players. Here is my take on what is happening and my plea to help us reverse this, after all many of us helped build this community, and sitting by and doing nothing is long since past...we need to Act!
Ai Graphic: Yes the frog is generated with AI, and depicts the old adage, "Throw a frog into boiling water and it will hop right out again, but place the frog is cool water and slowly heat up the pot, you can boil the frog without them even noticing, until its too late".
