Is Telemetry Spyware?

The Red Hat Desktop Team has placed a proposal to gather what they call "Privacy Preserving Telemetry" for Fedora 40. What will be capture is a subject for the Fedora Community to answer first, that list is then submitted to the FESCo for approval. Legal requirements for gathering data will be provided by Fedora Legal. So the feedback they want is not IF they should do this, but rather how they should do this. In this video I try and dig into what the tool they are proposing does, and hold my comments until the end.

One comments I left off concerns calling this Telemetry. Telemetry comes from the greek work Tele which means remote, and metry means to measure. Or Remote Measurement, usually telemetry is used to track how well a device is performing. Telemetry also provides information about the system and whether it is operating within its design. Telemetry can also record temperatures of different areas of the device, etc. Fedora is gathering data on how we long we use applications, which they say is anonymized.

Anonymized means the data used to identify an individual is removed, however Google has shown how analytics can be used to identify a user through their habits, the time of day they perform such tasks, even what area they live in. So keeping the data anonymous is a mythi.
