Coding After Thirty
Should I Go To Coding Bootcamp In 2019 - Subscribe http://bit.ly/codingafterthirty In this video, we will ask, "Are coding bootcamps worth it in 2019." ( read more below )
The short answer is no. Here are 5 things to consider.
- Are you willing to go ten thousand dollars or more into debt?
If you answered yes, then, by all means, go to Bootcamp. The only time when you should consider coding Bootcamp is when you have studied on your own for past 3 to 4 months, build a portfolio, tried interviewing, and still not able to get a job. And yes, you are absolutely debt-free and have 2 to 3 months of savings in your bank account.
- Have you tried learning to code on your own and build a portfolio?
Don't even think of going to Bootcamp, unless you spent at least 3 to 4 months studying on your own.
Even then, at that point, just continue on the self-study path and try to get some interviews.

- Is it a Bootcamp, or the interviewing abilities that help you land your first job?
What I heard from many Bootcamp grads is that it takes them an average of 2 to 3 months to get their first job.
So I am left to consider, is it the Bootcamp or is it the fact that they have been interviewing for the past 3 months.
I don't want to pay over 10k just to make this bet.
- It's not just what you know, but it is more of who you know.
The first job I got was not based on my experience, but my ability to network and make connections. Don't let your intercommunication inability stop you from getting out there and talking to people.
Your programming abilities are only important if you can promote your self to a potential employer.
Don't wait to get discovered. You must make your own opportunities.
- Dept, dept, and more dept.
This is seld evident. At least I hope it is. The only way I would go to Bootcamp if...
- I have 3 to 6 month of living expenses saved.
- Spending money at Bootcamp does not make me live paycheck to paycheck.
- I am ok with the idea that I might not get a job after graduation.
BTW, this is just my opinion but...
The only reasons I think people go to Bootcamp is because they feel it will make it easier to get a job. No matter what you do, it is difficult, so I always recommend the Free self-study path first.
Let me know in the comments below what your thought on this is? If you have completed a Bootcamp, let me know your experience. Maybe you can help change my mind.
