Not sure where to start when learning to code? Here are some ideas.
Before I get into my few tips, I just want to say that there are many approaches when studying. The best one is the one that works for you.
From my many failures on my journey, I discovered that there are no short cuts, you just have to do the work.
With that being said. Here are some of the tips that allowed me to learn to code faster.
- Stop doing tutorials and start building projects.
Don't fall into the tutorial trap. You MUST build your own projects.
It's better to have one project that you build on your own from scratch yourself than a bunch of tutorials that you followed along with and put the final product into your portfolio.
There is nothing wrong with that, but after 2 to 3 tutorials try to build something on your own,
The experience comes from failure and figuring out things on your own rather than watching someone else solve the problem for you.
- Get organized and plan.
Before starting a project, plan it out first. Get an idea on what you are looking to build. Make sure that you are not taking too much on at one time.
Break it down into steps and commit them to a calendar.
Focus on creating a design with basic functionality first. You can always add new features or change the look later.
You don't have to make everything perfect. Even professional programmers have versions of products that they fix, update and rerelease.
Your goal should be to finish what you have started.
- Hold yourself accountable.
Don't treat your studying as a hobby. It is not. Unless it is. I mean if your goal is to get a job in the field, it is not a hobby.
Casual programming once in a while will not cut it.
In reality, you should spend at least 2.5 hours minimum. I look to spend at least 4 hours per day in my studying.
I will be honest. Learning to code is frustrating, takes a long time, and there is tons of stuff you have to learn.
If you are doing it just for the money, I don't blame you. But if money is your only motivation, I hope you are really disciplined.
Becoming a web developer or programmer is a lifestyle choice.
Basically, you will be studying for the rest of your life.
- Do work.
With all the tips from above. The most important one I can give you is... just code.
If you want to become a better programmer than you must code more.
That is the secret.
What this means is less Netflix, less YouTube, lest talking and more sitting in front of your computer and coding.
Anyway, that's just my opinion.
Let me know in the comments below what has helped you to learn to program faster.
