Debian 12 Cinnamon Is now out!
The Independent Linux User
The grand daddy of all Debian based distribution of Linux is now out. That is Debian 12 Bookworm.
Recently, I get to use Sparky Linux Semi-Rolling based on Debian 12 Bookworm. It is still my daily driver until I found out that the grand daddy is ready for prime time.
I am ready to move over to Debian 12 Bookworm as a daily driver. It maybe a rough install but if I- perfected the installation, I will have a stable based distribution of Debian.
Welcome to Debian 12 Bookworm. This is the Cinnamon Desktop environment version 5.6.8. Kernel version 6.1.0-9-amd64.
It is the latest Cinnamon version I ever get. Much better than Linux Mint 21.1. I theme it to look like Linux Mint. Because Cinnamon Desktop is maintained by the Linux Mint team.
I also put in the Mozilla Repository on to it. So I can install the latest version of Mozilla Firefox. And put in Sparky semi-rolling repository like Orion and Core so I can install other software like Freefilesync and other software not found in the Debian Repository.
Though Debian 12 uses Version: 7.4.5.1 of LibreOffice, this works just fine for me. Because I don’t tend to open Microsoft Office documents.
But my video editor is in the latest version. Kdenlive Version 23.04.2 is really good. I can edit my videos here with no problem.
I am using Pipewire instead of PulseAudio. This will be the first time I will try Pipewire in many years I am doing Linux. I can say, Pipewire have come a long way since I try it on OpenSuse Tumbleweed and Fedora. It had gone better over the years. There are still rough edges but it can be fix with software updates. I did install Wireplumber (a session manager for PipeWire). I also install Pipewire-pulse so I can use some of my programs that uses Pulseaudio.
Cinnamon Desktop is running on X11. There is no Wayland support just yet. And there are some programs that does not support Wayland yet. So I am sticking to X11 instead.
Also this install of Debian 12 Cinnamon looks like Sparky Linux Orion. Because of the Sparky Linux repository both Orion and the Core. And there are Sparky Linux programs such as Aptus Software manager and Sparky Upgrade.
But it is still Debian 12 Cinnamon. Because I install it from Debian 12 Cinnamon Live ISO that I downloaded from debian.org.
Anyway, I will be keeping this install of Debian 12 Bookworm. It will be my daily driver until LMDE 6 comes out.
So if you want a stable distribution of Linux and you hate Ubuntu and/or Ubuntu based distribution, give Debian 12 Bookworm a try. It may not be beginner friendly but its a stable based for all you want to do.
