Vanessa's bio: Dr Vanessa Lee-Ah Mat (PhD), from the Yupungathi and Meriam people, has over 25 years’ experience in cultural governance connecting indigenous culture with mainstream services, government departments, and businesses. In 2005, she was awarded an Australian Government award for Outstanding Citizen in the Torres Strait for her leadership in social impact. Vanessa walks between Indigenous and non-Indigenous worlds strategically connecting cultures to economically empower indigenous communities globally, and as a means to reduce suicides. Associate Professor Lee-Ah Mat is a founding member of the Indigenous data sovereignty network focusing on Indigenous governance and sovereignty and is currently working with the Government to develop an Indigenous governance policy framework. In 2021, Dr. Lee-Ah Mat received the Griffith University First People’s, health Alumnus Award for her international leadership in cultural governance and social policy contribution. As the Chair of Walking Between Worlds, Vanessa brings her cultural governance experience and expertise to the blockchain world to energise Indigenous communities globally through NFTs.
