A VECTOR is a math thing that says: we have a something, and it has a magnitude – like how much. A SCOPE is an instrument for viewing or observing something. You know microscope, a device for view small things (micro).

A VECTORSCOPE measures color (the something) and how much we have (its intensity).

The VECTORSCOPE shows RED, YELLOW, GREEN, CYAN, BLUE, and MAGENTA, the primary colors you would see when light is run through a prism. Anything white, black, or gray (not a color) sits in the middle of the scope as a white dot.

The VECTORSCOPE is THE tool for determining if your colors are correct or not. It ONLY deals with actual color and its intensity.

The VECTORSCOPE also has a MAGIC LINE that shows skin or flesh tone. The red blood under the skin (which we all have), is what this line measures. If you film someone and isolate their skin in the shot their skin tone will fall at or near this line. That makes color balancing, especially when people are in the shot, a piece of cake.
