Have you ever caught yourself mimicking the accent or mannerisms of another person? Recently, congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez did a bit of an oopsie when she adopted African American vernacular English during a speech in front of a predominantly African American audience and her impression was not well received. Why would she do this? Was it a conscious decision or natural unconscious process? We'll address these points and many more as we explore communication accommodation, mimicry, and the chameleon effect.
