What is the West? Archilochus' Answer | Ancient Greece Revisited

It has become a "controversial topic" to ask: "What is the West" today, and most push their answer to certain extremes as a mere reaction. On one side, we have the adamant bravery and self-sacrifice, that was best displayed in the 300 Spartans who fought against the Asian invaders of Persia. On the other: the liberal culture of the European Enlightenment, as displayed in the great comedy writers like Voltaire, but just as often... bending and soft, unable to pose a fair resistance to less-than-tolerant cultures. But what if the West is even better displayed in the life of a warrior-poet, who held both sides in his hands and verses, and showed the world what the West truly is ..!
